Ccie, that was a great story! Brisco couldn’t fool the old master Sam Munchnik. Jack took his hard earned $ with him back to Florida. Dory Jr pleaded with Jack to pay Sam the extra $. Brisco refused.

jack brisco was one great wrestler…giant baba a legend, great match!!!

  3. styx4ever1963 says:

Thanks for posting this classic match!

  4. Sargebri says:

Brisco did catch some heat for this. The switch wasn’t approved by the NWA board. It was only done to give Baba the title just for AJPW’s tour .

  5. Sargebri says:

@mcfrs Everything today is geared to the short attention spans of the 18 to 35 demographic that watches wrestling. In fact, the only promotion that up until recently still had them on a regular basis was ROH. You will never see WWE or TNA have 1 hour Broadways anymore.

  6. styx4ever1963 says:

Any footage of Brisco regaining title

  7. styx4ever1963 says:

Thanks for the post this match was amazing!

  8. melbz1266 says:

bricoe was one of the best technical men to ever hold the title very few were as good as jack.

  9. VolumedMusicMan says:

That’s was a great story! Sam M. found out what the big payoff was in Japan. Brisco refused to kickback the extra $ owed to Sam.

  10. thunderbare says:

was that not Dick the Destroyer Beyer in Baba corner loved how they just pulled him over to the corner and is it just me or did Baba Go to the Barron Von Rashchke body building school

  11. songoku350 says:

Also in modern terms, Homicide losing the ROH title to Takeshi Morishima which gave him credibility and turned him into a main eventer in Japan

  12. MrWrestlingFan says:

I guess I can say Tyler/McGuinness HOUR DRAW but that was only 48 min :|

  13. mcfrs says:

Totally agree. The NWA title was king back in the day. If the NWA board of directors wanted you to be the champ, you have made it. They weren’t putting that belt around any wrestlers waist. Sam Mutchnik(spelling) didn’t play any games when it came to that. You wrestled 6 to 7 nights a week. Most of the time matches lasted an hour. When was the last time you saw a wrestling match last that long?

  14. ccie12933 says:

Brisco’s book tells a great story about how Terry Funk was actually the “middleman” in arranging the title change and the payoff.

  15. Reg197844 says:

This match was the first in a trend where American world champs would job their titles to the Japanese stars in Japan. Brisco and Race both dropped and regained (before returning home) their NWA titles to Baba. Backlund lost and regained the WWF belt to Inoki in a controversial mess. Bockwinkel and Zbzysko lost the AWA title to Tsuruta and Mr. Saito respectively.

  16. Jessman46205 says:

Say what you want about world’s titles and such. Say you get into wrestling for the money and entertainment. However, in my opinion, a true Professional Wrestler if he can say he was the NWA World Heavyweight Wrestling Champion, I’d say his career would be vindicated.

Thanks for posting this amazing clip of wrestling history.

  18. MrWrestlingFan says:

He was an amazing promoter and although not the best wrestler I always can get hooked when I’m watching him in the ring. Even in his latest matches but the crowd reaction really helped with that :p

  19. thebigandgreat1 says:

I’m not the biggest Baba fan but I will admit even though he looked like a malnourished Frankenstein he did hold his own in this great performance with the legendary Jack Brisco. Baba was a great promoter and IMO was that better then an overall worker. Baba depending on the opponents he could have great matches.

  20. samsdaddy0525 says:

No, that was not what I was implying. I literally meant Jack could go into the ring with a broom and make the broom look good. That is how great a worker Brisco was. And, yes Baba in his prime was a very good worker and very over in Japan.

  21. MrWrestlingFan says:

he was a tremendous worker till death :p

HELL HE’S A TREMENDOUS WORKER IN HIS GRAVE.

  22. pronkb000 says:

If you’re implying that ’70s Baba was a “broomstick”…no. He wasn’t. He was at one time a tremendous worker even if he had 8-inch biceps.

  23. Capncrunch1 says:

I thought the crowd was pretty great. Every time Baba scored some offense or kicked out, they would scream. That made the atmosphere of the match awesome.

  24. samsdaddy0525 says:

It has been said of Ric Flair that he could wrestle a broomstick and make it look good. Well, it was first said about Jack Brisco and with good reason.

  25. Reg197844 says:

Do you have the rematch a week later when Brisco won the belt back? Or any of Baba’s title changes with Harley Race?
